Hawthorn - A Herb for Heart Strength and Love

Hawthorn for the Heart, Emotionally and Spiritually

Hawthorn is one of the most commonly used herbal medicines for healing the heart, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension. In my clinical experience, it often exceeds expectations in its physical effects on the heart.

Emotionally and spiritually, hawthorn also carries very special gifts of strength and love. These aspects are not commonly discussed when prescribing this wonderful herbal medicine, and they are what I would like to explore in this blog post.

Hawthorn for Cardiovascular Health

Hawthorn has a long history of traditional use for supporting cardiovascular health, including hypertension and heart disease. Both the berries and leaves are used medicinally, most commonly dried and prepared as a tincture or tea.

Hawthorn berries in particular are beneficial for cardiac tissue. They act as antioxidants and help reduce inflammation directly within the heart. This physical support creates a strong foundation for deeper emotional and spiritual healing to take place.

The Spiritual Gifts of Hawthorn

I have direct experience witnessing hawthorn in action on a spiritual level. While emotional and spiritual healing often occur together, there are important distinctions between the two.

Hawthorn offers safety and support for self reflection in matters of the heart. This reflective process is essential for human growth and self development. Courage and the ability to move forward in life ultimately arise from having a clear and open heart.

Hawthorn Through the Doctrine of Signatures

To understand how hawthorn supports us emotionally, it is helpful to view it through the Doctrine of Signatures. This concept suggests that the visible characteristics of plants reflect their healing properties and their affinity for specific organs in the human body.

Hawthorn grows as a tree with bright red berries that fruit in late summer and early autumn. Both the berries and leaves are used as herbal medicine. The branches are covered with intermittent long, thin thorns.

These thorns are particularly revealing when we consider hawthorn’s emotional support in matters of the heart.

Emotional Protection and Healing of the Heart

I have seen hawthorn work wonders for people who are emotionally closed off in the heart. This may occur after shock, betrayal, or heartbreak. When pain becomes too much to bear, the heart retreats as a form of self protection. Over time, this withdrawal can lead to depression.

Hearts are meant to be expressed and shared. When safety has been lost, this becomes difficult. This closed-off response is a natural and understandable protective mechanism.

In order for the heart to heal, it must eventually move forward out of depression and back into love. I have seen depressed hearts appear caved in on a client’s chest and have used medicine to help bring the heart forward again into alignment with the physical body.

For this to occur, the heart must first feel safe. This is where hawthorn plays a vital role.

The Protective Role of Hawthorn

The thorns of hawthorn create a symbolic protective barrier around the heart, offering a sense of safety while healing takes place. While this protection is present, the heart can work through stored hurt and inflammation.

Hawthorn berries support this process physically by reducing inflammation in cardiac tissue. As the heart begins to feel safer and less inflamed, deeper healing can unfold.

Clearing Stagnation and Illusion

On a spiritual level, I have witnessed hawthorn working within the heart by plucking out old, knotted, blackened threads. These are symbolic of stagnation, disease, and illusion.

This is a powerful process. Having inner material revealed so it can be cleared allows us to reflect honestly on whether the path we are walking still aligns with who we are becoming. Hawthorn seems to offer the bravery required to look clearly at what is no longer serving us and to make informed decisions about how to move forward, often with the support of other modalities.

How I Use Hawthorn in Clinical Practice

In clinical practice, I primarily work with hawthorn berries, most often in the form of a liquid tincture at a 1:2 ratio. Dosage is individualised and generally ranges from 10 to 50 millilitres per week, depending on the person, their constitution, and the intention of treatment.

This may be dispensed in a dropper bottle for flexible dosing as required, or blended with other herbs into a personalised formula to be taken daily. Hawthorn works well both as a standalone remedy and as part of a broader cardiovascular, emotional, or spiritual support plan.

For those who feel called to work with hawthorn directly from the land, the berries are ready to harvest in late summer, around March onwards here in New Zealand. Care should be taken to harvest only from clean, unsprayed areas, as hawthorn is commonly grown near farmland and these areas are often heavily sprayed.

The berries can be dried and used to make your own preparations. A simple tea can be made using approximately two tablespoons of dried berries, steeped for around eight minutes, then strained. For best results, hawthorn is ideally taken daily for around one month to experience its full benefits.

I have also used hawthorn tincture with clients undergoing chemotherapy, specifically to help counter the oxidative stress and cardiac strain associated with certain chemotherapy drugs.

Who Hawthorn May Be Helpful For

Hawthorn can be beneficial for anyone experiencing cardiac related health concerns, including blood pressure imbalance and general cardiovascular support.

It may also be deeply supportive for people working through emotional shock, grief, heartbreak, long term stress impacting heart health, or a sense of being closed off or guarded in the heart.

As explored throughout this post, hawthorn works not only on the physical heart, but also on the emotional and spiritual layers, offering protection, safety, and the courage to move forward with an open heart.

Important Safety Note

If you are currently taking blood pressure lowering medication, hawthorn’s effectiveness in reducing blood pressure means it is important to work alongside your healthcare provider. Medication dosages may need to be monitored and adjusted accordingly.
