Parasite Cleanse - What You Need To Know
Share
Parasite cleansing is a hot topic in health-conscious circles right now. Unfortunately, there is also a great deal of misinformation about how to do it safely and effectively.
As a qualified naturopath and medical herbalist, I’ve researched this topic extensively and seen the results firsthand in clinical practice. In this article, I’ll walk you through what you need to know about safe, effective parasite cleansing - and how to know if it’s right for you.
What Is a Parasite Cleanse?
A parasite cleanse is a structured protocol designed to remove parasites such as helminths (worms), cysts, and other unwanted pathogenic species from the body - most commonly within the gastrointestinal system.
When present in disproportionate amounts, parasites may contribute to symptoms such as:
- Fatigue and brain fog
- Bloating, gas, and irregular elimination
- Poor nutrient absorption
- Skin issues
- Immune dysfunction
Could You Benefit From a Parasite Cleanse?
While parasite cleansing can be incredibly supportive for the right person, it is not a cure-all.
You may consider exploring this approach if you:
- Live with pets or work with livestock
- Have children in school or daycare
- Travel overseas regularly
- Experience ongoing digestive or immune concerns
Generally speaking, I recommend a parasite cleanse every 12 months for those with regular exposure risk, as part of ongoing health maintenance.
I strongly believe that our ancestors utilised cleansing practices, which were a normal part of maintaining wellbeing - something that has largely fallen out of modern awareness.
That said, a parasite cleanse may not necessarily be the answer you’re looking for. If you’re unsure which direction to take with your health, I’m always happy to guide you.
How My Parasite Cleanse Approach Works
My approach is simple, strategic, and designed to protect gut integrity while supporting detoxification pathways.
It includes:
- Herbal medicine formulated to remove parasites, disrupt biofilm, and facilitate detoxification
- Supportive liver detox and gut-friendly foods
- Soothing herbal medicine to support gastrointestinal function
- The use of S. boulardii probiotics before transitioning to a broad spectrum probiotic for overall gut health
I stock a parasite cleanse formula for adults, as well as a formulation specifically designed for children.
This protocol has been refined through years of clinical practice and focuses not just on removing parasites, but on supporting the body safely throughout the process.
Safety & Contraindications
Parasite cleansing, liver detox, heavy metal release, or any heavy cleanse is not suitable in the following circumstances:
- Elderly or immune-compromised individuals
- Debilitated health states in acute or chronic disease
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive
- Babies and children under 2–3 years of age
Older children may be treated, but only under the guidance of a qualified and experienced practitioner. Treating children is very different to treating adults and must be approached with care.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
This is one of the most common questions I receive in clinic.
Can you parasite cleanse while pregnant or breastfeeding?
The answer is, and always will be, no.
During a cleanse, chemicals and toxins are mobilised into the bloodstream. The liver works hard to convert these substances into forms that can be excreted through the bowel, while the kidneys flush waste through urine.
These toxins can pass into breastmilk and across the placenta to baby. It is simply not worth the risk.
My recommendation is always to wait until you have finished breastfeeding, or to undergo a cleanse at least 3–6 months prior to conceiving.
Additionally, many herbs commonly used in parasite cleansing and detoxification are not considered safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
