Spring Allergies & Herbal Solutions

The energy of Spring starts to build in early September here in New Zealand. It brings a gradual increase in light, and slowly the temperatures start to warm - but with the change of season comes pesky spring allergies like hay fever, itchy eyes, sneezing and more. In this blog post I'll cover why allergies occur, herbal solutions and additional supportive modalities to help you ease into Spring without the sneezes and anti-histamines.

Spring Allergies - What, Why & Causes

Spring allergies are essentially immune reactions to common seasonal triggers. Examples include:

  • Pollen
  • Grasses
  • Increased chemical exposure from spray drift
  • Mould from fluctuating temperatures and humidity
  • Pet dander
  • Dust mites
  • Air pollution

Exposure to these environmental allergens triggers a Type I hypersensitivity reaction where IgE antibodies activate mast cells, releasing histamine and causing rapid allergy symptoms - itchy eyes, sinusitis, swelling, post-nasal drip and sneezing to name a few.

Why is it that some people have more severe reactions to seasonal allergies than others?

There are a number of reasons, including:

  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Gut microbiome imbalances
  • Chronic stress (fight or flight response)

These stressors pile on the strain to an individual, who may respond with an increased sensitivity to allergens. If we can strengthen the individual's response to stressors, giving one the increased ability to withstand the stressors, often the immune response can improve and lessen the severity of symptoms over time.

Herbal Solutions

Herbal medicine is a wonderful alternative and first responder for seasonal allergies. I have used a variety of herbal medicine options in my clinic for years, all with incredible results for clients of all ages. It really is that simple. The trick is to start using herbal tinctures and tablets approximately 6 weeks prior to the onset of the 'spring season'.

This supports the immune system to withstand the gradual build up of allergen exposure as the season progresses. Typically, herbal medicine will offer a variety of actions:

  • Anti-allergic
  • Immune mediating
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Antioxidant (to combat free-radicals)
  • Liver detox support (for histamine clearance)

Top Herbal Helpers

My favourite herbal helpers are the following in liquid tincture form. These are all generally safe and suitable for children 12 months of age and up.

  • Nigella
  • Albizzia
  • Baical skullcap
  • Nettle
  • Calendula
  • Echinacea
  • Chamomile

Depending on the type of symptoms you may want to include additional liver support herbs, decongestant herbs if the sinuses are blocked, nervous system support if stress is a considerable factor and so on.

Additional Supportive Modalities

There are a number of additional supportive tools you can use to reduce the severity of seasonal allergy symptoms. These include:

  • Essential oils (use with caution)
  • Nebuliser (if breathing is impaired due to congestion)
  • Local honey - eating honey produced in your local area can support immune response to pollen exposure
  • Liver support - using anti-inflammatory foods and herbal teas to support phase I & II detoxification

When to Seek Help

If you struggle with seasonal allergies every year, it’s a sign that deeper support is needed. Often several underlying factors are at play - nutrient deficiencies, gut microbiome imbalance, liver sluggishness, or chronic stress - all of which can heighten your sensitivity to allergens. This is where working with a naturopath becomes invaluable, offering personalised guidance that looks at the full picture of your health.

Relying on antihistamines or over-the-counter medications year after year isn’t a long-term solution, as these only mask symptoms rather than address the root causes. A constitutional homeopathic remedy can also be helpful, as it supports the body in reducing a long-standing susceptibility to environmental triggers.

If you'd like tailored support for your allergies, consider booking a consultation so we can explore the underlying drivers and create a plan that truly supports your whole system.
